Washington Times Goes Open Source

The Washington Times is catching the collaborative wave and releasing all of its source code for its online services.  They hope that by encouraging anyone to tweak their code that they might come up with better solutions for online media.

The various codes released by the Washington Times allow access to django code for login utilities, tagging & semantic markup, project management and multimedia presentation.

It’s been proven time and time again (as discussed in Don Tapscott and Anthony D. Williams’ book Wikinomics) that mass collaboration works worders for advancing innovation.  With newspapers such as Washington Times and the New York Times open sourcing their codes and APIs, the future of newspapers could be in the hands of their readers.
